In order to run software on a machine the law requires a license. Business software that is going to be on multiple machines must have a license for each machine. The license most of us are most familiar with is the end user license; however, there are some options.
The end user license is not the best choice for business software. It only gives the user the right to run the software on one computer. You may create a back up disk, but using this software on another machine is a violation of the law. In fact, many companies are creating ways to detect the presence of software violations with the use of key codes and other devices.
Another license is the general public license or GPL. This license was meant to give the users more rights. It gives free access to software developed under this type of license. It allows for sharing of the software and modification. However, user modifications must be released under the same free license.

The drawback with the GPL is that the software it releases is limited. In addition, businesses stick close to popular business software. This ensures a sort of standard and consistency. In addition, keeping with popular business software allows companies to hire employees who are familiar with their software because they used it before. This would not be the case with the limited GPL software.
The best option for companies who plan on purchasing software for more than a couple computers may be a volume licensing option. Different companies may have different types of licensing available, but volume licensing basically means that you will be allowed to place the software on more than one computer.
It will be more expensive than purchasing one end user license; however, it will be less expensive than purchasing as many end user licensed software as you would have.
